Roy's is an upscale restaurant that "blends European cooking techniques with the fresh local ingredients found in Asia and the Pacific Rim".
The following was received from Jimmy Plaster at Roy's La Jolla (lajolla@roysrestaurant.com) on 6/09/07 in response to a question of gluten-free menu items:
"Yes, we do have suggestions for your food allergies here at Roy's La Jolla. I've compiled a list of "do's and don'ts" for you, I hope this helps:
1. Plain grilled fresh fish and meats
2. Butter or olive oil sautéed vegetables
3. Generally rice is ok4. No soy sauce or soy based sauces
5. Nigiri sushi and sashimi is ok
6. Demi-glace should be ok if red wine is not a problem for you
7. Shrimp Sticks should be ok
8. Plain Sate Sticks should be ok
9. Our Sweet Home Waima-Nalo Salad should be ok
Once you have chosen a date and time for your dinner, please feel free to call us here at the restaurant to make your reservation. Or if you'd prefer, send another email and we'll take care of it. We will note your food allergies in the reservation, and inform the kitchen promptly. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions or comments.
Mahalo!"
When followed up with a question about their dessert on 6/10/07, Jimmy responded "Yes our Soufflé is gluten-free."

"I've had their warm chocolate souffle and it is absolutely wonderful."

"I have dined at both the Atlanta and Orlando locations of Roy's Restaurant. They are apparently owned by the company that owns Outback, among others. They do not have a gluten free menu but their Chefs are trained in safe allergen food prep and many items on their menu are gluten free or can be made so by changing the soy sauce to something else. The flourless chocolate souffle is not to be missed! If you order it, ask them to leave off the gluten cookie that usually anchors the ice cream.
To check for a Roy's near you visit www.roysrestaurant.com. Since each city has different dishes specific to their store, there isn't much on their online menu.
I have no affiliation with Roy's but just like to pass on great places to dine out at when I find them. It's an upscale place so the average price for dinner is $50 pp."
