A gluten-free menu is available upon request at the each Outback Steakhouse, as well as on their website. To view on their website, click on Outback Steakhouse Menu, and then on "Gluten Free Menu". The menu is provided in a PDF that will be downloaded onto your desktop. Ingredients and cooking methods were reviewed in depth by GIG (the Gluten Intolerance Group) and Outback Steakhouse to confirm their gluten-free status.
Outback Steakhouse provides a casual atmosphere “suggestive of the Australian Outback”. The menu offers beef and steak items, as well as a variety of chicken, ribs, seafood, and pasta dishes.
"Outback Steakhouse places a piece of wheat bread in their brown sugar to keep it fresh. Each Outback Steakhouse determines whether or not to add the bread; this decision is based on how quickly they use up the brown sugar and whether or not the bread is needed. It is possible that the Outback near you may not use the bread. It is best to ask the manager once you arrive at the restaurant or call ahead." Unsigned to SillyYak site, 12/08
"I have been living GF for about a year now and have found eating out very frustrating, but occasionally, we find that one place that is so helpful or actually has a GF menu! I have a new favorite place to eat and that is Outback Steak House. They have an actual GF menu and the food always tastes great. Their House Ranch Dressing is really good and is GF." "Here in California:
1. Outback has just added a crab dip to their GF menu. the toasts that come with are NOT GF, but I had a chat with the manager, and he said that we are welcome to bring our own tortilla chips for the dip.
2. Outback here will probably be the last to get GF bread - boo! because the west coast ones are mainly franchises, not corporate owned
3. the waitress was emphatic - celiacs should NOT eat the special seasonings, even though they are listed as GF. based on my experience, I think she's right and had my steak with only salt, added at the table."

"We have eaten at the Outback in Bellevue, WA. for many years with no
incident. Tonight changed all that. We ordered our "normal" (steak,
baked potato, steamed broccoli, and a Cesare salad)and explained to the
waitress that **everything** had to be gluten free..please wipe out the
salad bowl, etc. The dinner came and I took one bite of the broccoli (my
daughter had already eaten hers) and could taste seasonings. I asked the
waitress what was on the broccoli and she said butter and seasonings. I
asked if it was gluten free and she said she didn't know ..returned and
said the broccoli had gluten on it via the seasonings BUT it was all my
fault because I didn't order off the gluten free menu.
The manager explained to us that the kitchen does not know gluten free
from beans and it is up to the waitress to tell the kitchen "no
seasonings" and "no croutons " etc. Furthermore the waitress needs to
have the gf menu in front of her in order to read the instructions on
the menu in order to tell the kitchen what to do. Again they reiterated
that it was **my fault** for not pointing to the steamed broccoli on the
gf menu.
What concerns me the most is that the kitchen does not know what gf
means . I have a real issue with possible cross contamination exposure
if the kitchen does not understand what gluten free means. So most likely
my daughter and I will be very sick and Outback's response what that it
was our fault for not pointing to the specific item (steamed broccoli)
on the gf menu."

There has been a lot of discussion on the list about Outback menus lately. I am responsible for reviewing their menus, which is a laborious process. The confusion has come in the updates to the menus which have recently taken place. The GF menu on Outback's website is the most up-to-date. In the process of doing some new marketing, the old menus were pulled from the restaurants. The message some managers got was that they were no longer offering GF menus. That was not correct, they were simply replacing menus.
Corporate offices and marketing advised that the new menus were shipped to restaurants about a week ago. IF they are not available at the restaurant you are visiting, please ask them to print a copy from the Outback website.
Outback and I appreciate feedback. When I receive comments from consumers,
they are forwarded to Outback who tends to respond very quickly. They were
the leaders in providing GF menus in chain restaurants, and are appreciative
of the response they have received in return. Because of the overwhelmingly
positive feedback, nearly all of their concept restaurants also have GF
menus available.
GIG and our GF Dining programs are evolving and growing. We appreciate the
support of the gluten intolerant community to the restaurants who have GF
menus. If you have any questions or concerns about our programs, please
contact our GF Dining Program Manager: Madelyn at GFRAP@comcast.net
