Reminder: You must take the responsibility of being vigilant by always reconfirming the GF status of a menu item and addressing cross-contamination issues each and every time.
In-N-Out is a fast food restaurant that offers a simple menu of hamburgers,
fries, and drinks. They do not give the gluten-free information on email but
only through
customer service on the telephone. Because of their simple menu, cross-contamination issues are at a minimum.
The secret menu items are
listed on their website, which are important for ordering gluten-free. Just
click on the "Secret Menu" symbol in the menu section to see the possibilities. "Protein Style" is how to order the burger wrapped in lettuce rather than a bun.
The buns are the only item considered to contain gluten on the whole menu, according to Customer Service Representative, Cheryl, on 3/25/10. She said they had recently received confirmation that their spread is indeed gluten free.
"We ate at two In and Out burgers over the weekend. My son and I are
extremely sensitive. We ate the Protein only burgers (burger, cheese,
tomatoes and lettuce) and had the french fries.
It was the most amazing experience. The servers were friendly and
knowledgeable....I realize now that I could have asked much more but
having just had a heinous experience with McDonald's I was gun shy (see
below). The kitchen was incredibly clean and I could see the entire
process - the potoates were chipped right in front of you and put into
dedicated fryers. There was a bun station that was separate to
everything else and definitely away from the burgers. We ate well -a
huge treat for my son who can't usually eat at these places.
I just called them - 1-800-786-1000 - the customer service rep was again
knowledgeable and friendly. He said that the only thing they have with
gluten is the bun. I have experienced before that people say this but
they don't know what they're talking about - I asked him how he know ---
he said that he was reading from an allergen sheet. The beef patties,
cheese, spread, salad, milkshakes, ketchup, mustard, sodas are all
gluten free.
Seems almost too good to be true but I am thrilled. Of course, if you
know otherwise, please do let me know." To the Listserv, 3/09
". . . but recently I've discovered the In and Out "Animal Style Fries" from
their secret menu... The In and Out chain has gluten free fries made from
whole potatoes fried in gluten free, simple oil in a dedicated fryer. (ALWAYS-
they
don't have any gluten fried items). Their animal style fries have a slice
of cheese, onions sauteed on a special
section of the grill, and a squirt of special sauce. I noticed on our SY
menu there was mention of possible CC from the special sauce, but it comes
from
a squirt bottle, not from a container with knives etc, so I think it's
pretty safe. Anyway, the best part is the onions." Brenda to SillyYak site,

"... In-N-Out has a burger called the "Flying Dutchman" on their "Secret Menu" which is 2 hamburger patties and 2 slices of cheese. Basically a Double Double plain without the bun! For those celiacs that don't always want protein style." Jake
