RJ's Note: Physicians and researchers agree that gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin because the protein molecules are too large. This means that lotions, shampoos, etc. will not get in your digestive system and cause damage to your upper intestine. But if you are going to eat with your hands immediately after applying a lotion, for instance, be sure to rinse your hands. You may still have an topical reaction to a shampoo or lotion - we celiacs are often sensitive to many things. Discontinue use if this happens.
Persons with DH may want to be careful with topical products. Dr. Peter Green states in his book The Hidden Epidemic: "It is possible that these products (topical) contain ingredients that irritate broken skin, a common side effect of healing DH lotions."
It is generally recommended to only use gluten-free products on your lips, as that could get ingested.
The following information is provided by manufacturer's about the gluten-free status of their products. Please use this as a starting place only, and continue to read the ingredient labeling each and every time. If you have further questions, contact the manufacturer directly.
